Buchkunst ist vielfältig – die künstlerische Gestaltung sowie das technische und ästhetische Niveau bilden einen wichtigen Rahmen für die Inhalte rund um Kunst, Kultur, Architektur, darüber hinaus wissenschaftliche, gesellschaftliche und soziologische Analysen. Welche Unterschiede gibt es in der Definition von guter Buchgestaltung? Welche Gemeinsamkeiten gibt es bei Material, Format, Satz und dem Druck der Publikationen?

Diese Ausstellung zeigt die aktuellen, internationalen Tendenzen der Buchgestaltung. Es werden 14 Bücher aus Dänemark, Deutschland, China, Finnland, Frankreich, der Niederlande, Norwegen, der Schweiz und Tschechien gezeigt. Sie alle wurden 2024 von der Stiftung Buchkunst im internationalen Wettbewerb „Best Book Design from all over the World / Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt“ 2024 ausgezeichnet. Außerdem werden weitere 21 Bücher gezeigt, die von der Jury auf die Shortlist des Wettbewerbs gesetzt wurden. Anfang Februar 2024 wurden sie von einer fünfköpfigen, internationalen Jury aus rund 600 national ausgezeichneten Titeln aus 34 Ländern ausgewählt und im Rahmen der Leipziger Buchmesse im März 2024 prämiert. Die Jury bestand in diesem Jahr aus Jianping He (Grafikdesigner, China/Deutschland), Päivi Helander (Grafikdesignerin, Finnland), Isidora Nikolić (Professorin für Digital Arts, Serbien), Alexandra Stender (Herstellungsleiterin Suhrkamp, Deutschland) und Scott Vander Zee (Grafikdesigner, USA).

Die Ausstellung in der Kunstbibliothek der HALLE 14 bietet nun die Möglichkeit, die aktuell weltweit schönsten 35 Bücher in Ruhe zu studieren. Inmitten von 25.000 Kunstbüchern aus der ganzen Welt mit seltenen Exemplaren bietet unsere Spezialbibliothek den perfekten Ort für den gemeinsamen Austausch und die gegenseitige Anregung zum Thema Buchkunst. Leipzigs internationaler Ruf als Buchstadt ist historisch gewachsen: 1914 wurde hier die „Internationale Ausstellung für Buchgewerbe und Graphik“ (BURGA), 1927 die „Internationale Buchkunst-Ausstellung“ (iba) erstmals veranstaltet sowie 1963 der erste Wettbewerb der „Schönsten Bücher aus aller Welt“ initiiert.

This exhibition shows the current international trends in book design. It features 14 books from Denmark, Germany, China, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. They were all honoured by the Stiftung Buchkunst in the international competition “Best Book Design from all over the World” 2024. In addition, another 21 books that were shortlisted for the competition by the jury will be on display. At the beginning of February 2024, they were selected by a five-member international jury from around 600 nationally recognised titles from 34 countries and honoured at the Leipzig Book Fair in March 2024. This year's jury consisted of Jianping He (graphic designer, China/Germany), Päivi Helander (graphic designer, Finland), Isidora Nikolić (professor of digital arts, Serbia), Alexandra Stender (head of production at Suhrkamp, Germany) and Scott Vander Zee (graphic designer, USA).

This exhibition in the art library of HALLE 14 offers the opportunity to discover 35 of the world's most beautiful books. Surrounded by 25,000 art books from all over the world with rare copies, this specialised library offers the perfect place for sharing and mutual inspiration on the subject of book art. Leipzig's international reputation as a “book city” has grown historically: the “International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Graphics” (BURGA) was organised for the first time in 1914 followed by the “International Book Art Exhibition” (iba) in 1927 and the first “Most Beautiful Books from Around the World” competition in 1963.
